COVID 19 is providing its own unique challenges, requiring all to stay extra vigilant on changing port call conditions and regulations.
The National Homeland Security Advisory System is at Yellow (MARSEC Level I), or an elevated level of threat for the Port of Providence
The Port of Providence and Narragansett Bay are currently utilizing Eastern Standard Time (GMT - 4 )
The US Army Corp of Engineers has advised the current maximum air draft for Cape Cod Canal transits is 135 ft. Deep draft is restricted to 30 ft due to shoaling. Vessels over 23 ft will need tide window for transit.
For your planning purposes, the next and final round of Canal closures for the Vertical Lift Railroad Bridge maintenance project will be on March 13-17 and March 20-24. The span will be lowered and the Canal will be closed to all marine
traffic, Monday through Friday, from 0700-1600. Once lowered for the workday, the bridge won’t be able to move until work is completed each day.
The closures are needed for the rehabilitation and replacement of critical bridge components. The Canal will be reopened each day as early as possible. The number of days with scheduled closures will be reduced if work progresses faster
than predicted. The schedule is weather dependent and subject to change.
Questions about the project or coordinating transits around the daily closures should be directed to the Duty Marine Traffic Controller, US Army Corps of Engineers, Cape Cod Canal Field Office at 978-318-8500 or VHF Channel 14.
